An Illinois Supreme Court ruling became effective July 1, 2006 that states that all parents with minor children who separate/divorce must complete a 4 hour mandated class. The Parent Place designed the
Kids' Rights program to meet the needs of families in this situation.
Kids' Rights is designed to provide parents tools necessary to maintain focus on their children during the process of rebuilding after a separation/divorce. Major components of the curriculum are "All Children Have the Right to Know and Love Both Parents", "Children Neither Want or Need to be Exposed to the Conflict of Their Parents", "All Children Have the Right to be Physically, Emotionally and Financially Supported by Both Parents", "How Divorce Impacts Children" and "One Child/Two Homes".
Kids' Rights is offered three times per month on a sliding fee scale. Clients pay from $125.00 - $25.00, dependent on their individual income. To date, evaluations for this program have been very positive. Parents who initially were resistant to participating in a mandated class have reported gaining a new perspective – their child's – on the separation/divorce process. One client wrote, "The Kids' Rights program opened my eyes to things I never really thought were big issues". A certificate of successful completion is presented upon fulfilling the requirements.
