Guardianship Assistance & Support

It was a little scary to know that at the age of 64 I would now be responsible for three children under the age of seven. I had raised my own children and now I was responsible for raising my grandchildren because their parents could not care for them. I don’t know what I would have done without the support of The Parent Place. They were with me every step of the way and still continue to be there for me.

Court Advocacy

A court advocate from The Parent Place is available to assist any relative caregivers in obtaining legal guardianship of minor children in Sangamon County. This service includes assistance with filling out guardianship paperwork, support throughout this process, information and referrals for other caregiver resources and is provided free of charge.

Hours. The advocate is at the courthouse on Mondays from 8:45 to 10:15 am. They are available for appointments/walk-in clients at The Parent Place office on Mondays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, and Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Appointments are preferred.

Relatives as Parents Network (RAPN)

The Parent Place offers a monthly support group for grandparents and relatives raising children. They are available at noon and evenings. The meetings include education, community resources, advocacy, activities, encouragement and support from The Parent Place staff and other relative caregivers. These support groups include others just like you who are in your same situation. They include grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, great uncles, and friends of the family.

Please do not go through this challenging time without reaching out! Call (217) 753-8730, ext. 102 for more information.
